Summertime and the living is easy. That’s right … it’s summertime! And nothing says summer like slow relaxing days by the pool with a nice cold beverage in your hand.

And when that nice cold beverage is all-slushy-like with rum in it? Well, that’s the best kind of nice cold beverage around.

I hadn’t made this slush in years. But when a bunch of friends got together for a pool party to kick off the summer season a couple of weeks ago, I decided it was time to pull this oldie-but-goodie recipe out of hiding.

This is one of those pour-a-bunch-of-juices-together-with-some-rum, let it freeze, and scrape-it-out-like-Italian-ice type slush recipes. I mix mine in a large 22-cup Tupperware container, then pop on the lid, and pop it all in the freezer.

When it comes time to enjoy its slushiness, simply use a sturdy spoon to scrape the slush out Italian-ice style and plop it in a glass. The rum keeps the mixture from freezing solid, so it’s pretty easy to scoop out. If it’s tough at first, don’t worry … just 5 minutes sitting out of the freezer will fix that.

Once the slush is scooped out, fill the remainder of the glass with 7-Up or Sprite, and sip away to beat that summer heat.

Now, how I came by this recipe always cracks me up.

See, growing up I had this sweet little great-aunt named Aunt Bertha.

She was just a tiny little thing … I know for sure she didn’t stand even 5-feet tall. She was French-Canadian … as was most of my Mom’s side of the family, … spoke very little very broken English, wore the little house-dress-type outfits like Aunt Bee of the Andy Griffith Show, and had the whole white hair thing going on, too.

Every summer or so, my family would trek up from central Vermont to just about the St. Lawrence River in Quebec to visit Aunt Bertha and all our cousins there, too. We’d spend a long weekend or several days visiting, sleeping on sleeping bags on the floor, and relying on our few bilingual family members to help translate conversations.

Even if I couldn’t quite understand everything she said, I always remember my Aunt Bertha as a very sweet “little old lady.”

Not exactly the drink-rum-slush type, you’d think.

But I bet you can guess whose recipe this is, right?!? … Aunt Bertha’s!

Yep, I got this Rum Slush recipe from my little, sweet, eighty-something-year-old-at-the-time Great Aunt Bertha.

And let me tell you, just like sweet Aunt Bertha … this Rum Slush recipe is a keeper.

With its refreshing citrus taste and super-cool slushiness, Rum Slush is simply perfect for sipping by the pool on those hot summer days.

Even if there’s no pool to be seen. Or even no hot day, for that matter. {wink, wink} Rest assured, I know Great Aunt Bertha would approve.

Rum Slush

(Printable recipe)


  • 24 oz. grapefruit juice
  • 24 oz. pineapple juice
  • 1 (12 oz.) can frozen orange juice, thawed
  • 1 (12 oz.) can frozen lemonade, thawed
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 6 c. cold water
  • 16 oz. white rum
  • 7-Up or Sprite for serving


Combine grapefruit juice, pineapple juice, thawed orange juice, thawed lemonade, and sugar in a large freezer-safe sealable container. Stir until sugar dissolves. Add water and rum; stir to combine. Cover and freeze overnight.

TO SERVE: Fill a glass 1/2- to 3/4-full with slush and fill the remainder of the glass with chilled 7-Up or Sprite. Serve with a straw. (
